THE PUBLICATION

How we test

ToolCurrent uses vendor and primary sources, reputable third-party information, the editor’s own experience, and documented observations from qualified testers or contributors when appropriate. Articles distinguish research and synthesis from first-hand testing; not every comparison or guide involves a hands-on trial.

Evaluation framework

Every product review is anchored to a versioned scoring methodology. The methodology defines the dimensions we score — for example, for a CRM: pipeline management, lead capture and routing, automation depth, reporting, integrations, mobile experience, ease of use, and support. Each dimension has a weight. The overall score is the weighted average of dimension scores; we never override the calculated score to nudge a product up or down for editorial or commercial reasons.

A methodology becomes immutable the first time it is used to score a product. Improvements to how we evaluate a category ship as a new methodology version, so historical scores remain comparable to the evidence that produced them.

Testing process

When we test a product, we use a free plan, free trial, or paid tier appropriate to the review's target reader. Workflow testing uses representative data (contacts, deals, subscribers, listings, campaigns) to examine how the product works in practice. Product information gathered from vendor sources does not by itself establish first-hand testing.

When appropriate, ToolCurrent may also use qualified third-party testers or contributors to help collect first-hand testing data and observations.

Testing is documented as we go. Screenshots and observations become the evidence that supports each scored dimension. When a product's marketing claim conflicts with our observed behavior, the observation wins and the discrepancy is called out in the review.

Scoring dimensions

Dimensions vary by category. Every category methodology weights its dimensions to reflect what actually matters for the review's target buyer — a CRM's mobile experience is weighted lower for an inside sales team than for an outside field team, and each review states which weighting was applied.

Pricing is scored on transparency and value at realistic usage volumes, not on being cheapest. Support is scored on both response quality and the availability of self-serve documentation.

Evidence and sources

Every scored dimension links to the evidence that produced its score — a screenshot, a linked source, or a specific testing note. ToolCurrent checks pricing against primary vendor sources as part of its research and records verification evidence when available. Pricing can change and should be confirmed with the vendor; a price without recorded verification should not be treated as recently checked.

We prefer primary sources for external product facts. Reputable third-party reporting may supplement them, with attribution and a link, when relevant evidence is unavailable from the vendor. A linked source establishes only the facts it supports; it does not turn research into first-hand testing.

Updates and verification

Pricing, features, and interfaces can change after publication. We review information as part of our research and when changes or possible inaccuracies come to our attention. Where a verification date is supplied, it refers to the information checked on that date; it does not promise a recurring or automatic recheck.

When re-verification finds a material change, the review is updated and its `updatedAt` timestamp advances. If a change is significant enough to affect the score or recommendation, it is called out at the top of the article.
